In Taking Back the Good Book, Woodrow Kroll examines the trends of biblical literacy in America. Kroll compares the Bible's influence on the Founding Fathers to its influence on modern Americans. He provides examples of how the decline in concern for moral living can be attributed to a decline in biblical literacy.

Kroll also explains multiple reasons for why biblical literacy is beneficial, including the Bible's ability to shape a person's self-identity and its use as a moral guide. In the same way, Kroll observes how a lack of biblical literacy causes moral uncertainty. Many people who do not have a thorough understanding of the Bible's teachings do not feel that they have a firm guide to follow, so they make choices, moral or immoral, which are popular at the time. In closing, Kroll offers advice to individuals, parents, church leaders, churches and other organizations for educating the next generation about the Bible.
